This is a framed Silbury Hill print – a wood engraving miniature view from Waden Hill near Avebury, Wiltshire.
The landscape around Avebury is teeming with well preserved ancient sites. A short walk from the megaliths of Avebury stone circle along the West Kennett Avenue, takes you along the eastern side of Waden Hill. Following the footpath from the end of the avenue over the hill reveals one of the best views in Britain – Silbury Hill surrounded by the downs.
This small print depicts the Neolithic mound nestled in its basin, the foreground showing the trees at the foot of Waden Hill, lining the Winterbourne as it heads down to Swallowhead Springs, and behind Silbury the rolling downs and clouds.
I have walked and sketched the Avebury landscape for many years now and this view remains one of my favourites. I’ve created a number of prints of Silbury Hill in recent months, and continue to be inspired by the ancient history of this landscape.
This image was carved into end-grain wood and printed using professional, vegan relief inks. Each of the six prints in the edition is impressed upon acid-free heavyweight smooth paper, and is presented in a small, black frame (Ikea ‘Tysslinge’)
You can read more about my Silbury Hill print work and the development of this piece in my July 2022 update. I work extensively in linocut – both in black and white and in colour – and this seemed an ideal subject for my first wood engraving.
For an overview of Silbury Hill this page from English Heritage is a good introduction. As with any handmade product, each print in the edition will vary slightly.
