Description

The Devil affrighted – an original limited edition linocut print based on eighteenth century woodcuts.

Inspired by early printed books and pamphlets in western Europe, this print uses the the stock characters of well-to-do gentlemen, alchemists, devils and demons from eighteenth century chapbooks to tell a modern fable.

In my narrative the devil confronts his reflection in a full-length mirror, and is horrified to see a well-dressed, mortal man.
Perhaps the devil is not as all powerful as he thought, or – perhaps worse – ruthless men of means and the exploits of empire were still more evil.

The print is roughly central on an A4-sized sheet, ideal for an A4 landscape 10 x 8 inch frame when used with a carefully selected mount. This is an unframed, unmounted handmade print.

The prints are titled, signed and given a unique edition number.

The print is produced using Cranfield professional relief printing ink and printed on white, acid-free 130gsm cartridge paper. Print material choices are designed to produce a long-lasting, archive-quality print with a small environmental footprint.

All my prints are created using a small press with some hand finishing. As with all relief printing, variation in appearance and printing aberrations are a natural part of the hand-finished lino print process. each of my prints is reviewed and only the best make it to the edition.
